The first Pinus Radiata Radiata seedlings were planted on Redlands farm in 1942.  This was the beginning of the change from harvesting and processing indigenous hardwoods to softwood production.

Radiata Pine is the main species grown on the Company properties, although there are small lots of Eucalyptus Diversicolor (Karrigum), and Acacia Mearnsii (Black Wattle).  Radiata Pine is grown commercially in Western and Southern Cape as well as in Southern Hemisphere countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Chile. 

The seedlings for our Company plantations are obtained from a local nursery.  These seedlings are grown from selected seed obtained from seed stock at the Department of Forestry, Pretoria.

The plantations are managed over a twenty year cycle, for pole material, to a thirty year cycle, for sawlog production.  During this period there are various weeding, pruning and thinning programmes put in place to ensure a high quality timber demanded by the markets which are both local and export.  The trees are also fertilized at planting to help maximize the increment growth.  (The Sylviculture management system of the plantations and indigenous forests fall under the Principals of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
